The Turkish government has cancelled the passport of former Yarına Bakış columnist Mehmet Efe Caman “due to the ongoing situation in Turkey,” officials from the Turkish Embassy in Ottawa have told the columnist on Saturday.
Posting successive tweets late on Saturday, Caman, who is also a visiting professor at Memorial University in Canada, said that his and his family members’ passports were cancelled by Turkish authorities without any legal cause.
“My passport has been cancelled. My wife and my kids’ passports too. Without any legal cause. I am ashamed of being a citizen of this county,” Caman tweeted.
“When I asked about the reason of cancellation, the official at the embassy told me if I am not aware of the situation in Turkey,” Caman said in another tweet.
Professor Caman studies and teaches international relations, in particular Turkish Foreign Policy, Caucasus, Central Asia and the Middle East. He has published research on Turkish foreign policy, Caucasus – Central Asia and Middle East, EU energy and foreign policy in Caucasus and Central Asia.
