An indictment prepared against 11 rights defenders including Amnesty International’s (AI) Turkey Director İdil Eser seek 15 years in jail for each of the suspects over terror charges.
The human rights activists were detained during a workshop at a hotel on İstanbul’s Büyükada on July 5. While three of them were later released pending trial, the remaining eight still remain in pretrial detention.
Media reported on Sunday that the activists are accused of either membership to an armed terrorist organization or of aiding it. They face jail sentence of between 7.5 to 15 years.
Idil Eser and Taner Kilic from AI Turkey, İlknur Üstün from the Women’s Coalition, lawyer Günal Kurşun from the Human Rights Agenda Association, lawyer Nalan Erkem from the Citizens Assembly, Nejat Taştan from the Equal Rights Watch Association, Özlem Dalkıran from the Citizens’ Assembly, lawyer Seyhmus Özbekli, Veli Acu from the Human Rights Agenda Association and two foreign trainers, Ali Garawi and Peter Steudtner.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan accused the human rights defenders of plotting a follow-up to a July 15, 2016 coup attempt during a press conference on July 8.
