A recent draft bill prepared by Turkey’s ruling AK Party seeks to ease regulations for reporting public workers to police in case of suspected crimes.
Prosecutors or inspectors are entitled to ignore complaints if whistleblowers did not provide certain information in their tips, Cumhur Çilesiz, an Interior Ministry said adding that that the bill, if enacted, will pave the way for appeal of such cases.
Informants should include in their complaints their full names and permanent address and complaints they provide should rely on concrete evidence featuring clear description of suspected people and crimes.
The bill will leave public workers vulnerable to any complaint, main opposition Republican Peoples’ Party (CHP) deputy Musa Çam was quoted by Birgün daily.
Early this month, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called on people to report sympathizers of Gülen Movement to police, accusing the movement of masterminding the July 15 coup attempt which killed over 260 people.
The movement has repeatedly denied any involvement in the attempt.
“You may have friends from within this community. I am asking you to uncover them. You need to report them to police and prosecutors. Why? This is our duty to the nation,” said Erdoğan.
